“This has been a problem for consumers for a very long time and we are going to address it in our forthcoming public health announcement,” Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, the FDA’s chief medical officer, said on Monday.
Dr. Katlowitz added that the FDA’s warning will take the form of a “black box” that says “do not prescribe” a drug to a person under 18, even if that person has a heart condition or is taking any other medication.
“The FDA’s most important warning is that you should not take any of these products without first talking to your doctor and not using them,” he said.
A spokesperson for the FDA said, “We are taking steps to ensure that consumers have access to safe and effective medications.”
Since its approval last May, the Food and Drug Administration has issued new and additional warnings about the safety of prescription drugs.
